It’s a common misunderstanding that there is a Texas law against picking bluebonnets. Our librarians have not been able to find a law on this topic.

The Texas Department of Public Safety published a press release about bluebonnets in 2015. It confirms that "there is no law against picking the state flower." It goes on to urge Texans to consider other laws and safety issues, including:

  • Laws against destroying rights-of-way and government property
  • Criminal trespassing
  • Impeding traffic
  • Parking prohibitions
  • Snakes, fire ants, and other natural dangers
